What is root canal treatment?
Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. It holds the nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack or an old filling lets germs reach the pulp, it becomes infected and painful.
Root canal treatment (RCT) removes this infected pulp, cleans the narrow canals inside the root and seals them. Your own tooth stays in place and keeps working for chewing. Most back teeth need a crown afterwards to protect them.
Who needs it?
- Strong or throbbing tooth pain, often worse at night
- Pain that stays after eating something hot or cold
- Swelling, or a small pimple-like bump on the gum
- A tooth that has turned dark
- A deep cavity or crack seen on the X-ray
How the procedure works
-
01
Check-up and X-ray
Dr. Yeshwant examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to see the roots and how far the infection has spread.
-
02
Numbing
Local anaesthesia numbs the tooth and gum, so you feel pressure but not pain.
-
03
Cleaning the canals
A small opening is made in the tooth. The infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned with fine rotary files and a disinfecting rinse.
-
04
Filling and sealing
The clean canals are filled with a rubber-like material and the opening is closed with a filling.
-
05
Crown
In a later visit, a crown is fitted over the tooth so it does not crack while chewing.
Recovery and aftercare
- ✓Mild soreness for 2–3 days is normal. Take the medicine your dentist prescribes.
- ✓Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the crown is fitted.
- ✓Brush and floss as usual.
- ✓Call us if the swelling grows or the pain gets worse after 3 days.
Common questions
Does root canal treatment hurt?+
The tooth is numbed first, so most patients feel only pressure. The treatment removes the infection that causes the pain, so most people feel better afterwards.
How many visits does it take?+
Many root canals are finished in one sitting. A badly infected tooth may need two visits. The crown is fitted in a separate visit.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?+
Back teeth usually do, because they take heavy chewing force and can crack. The doctor will tell you if your tooth needs one.
How long does a treated tooth last?+
With a good crown, daily brushing and regular check-ups, a root-canal-treated tooth can last for many years.
What does root canal treatment cost in Balewadi?+
It depends on the tooth and the number of canals. We tell you the exact cost after the X-ray, before we start.
