What is crowns and bridges?
A crown, also called a cap, is a cover that fits over the whole tooth. It protects a tooth that is broken, worn down or weak after a root canal, and brings back its natural shape.
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. It uses the teeth on both sides of the gap for support, with a false tooth joined in between. Crowns and bridges can be made in zirconia, ceramic or metal-ceramic.
Who needs it?
- Teeth treated with a root canal
- Cracked, broken or badly worn teeth
- Teeth with very large fillings
- One or two missing teeth with healthy teeth on both sides
- Discoloured or oddly shaped teeth
How the procedure works
-
01
Check-up and planning
We take an X-ray, check the tooth and discuss material options and cost.
-
02
Shaping the tooth
After numbing, the tooth is shaped slightly so the crown can fit over it.
-
03
Mould and shade
A mould or scan of your teeth is taken and the colour is matched. A temporary crown is fitted for the meantime.
-
04
Fitting
In the next visit, the final crown or bridge is checked for bite and fixed in place with dental cement.
Recovery and aftercare
- ✓Avoid sticky or very hard food for 24 hours.
- ✓Some sensitivity to cold for a few days is normal.
- ✓Clean under a bridge daily with a floss threader or water flosser.
- ✓Do not bite on pens, nails or ice.
Common questions
Zirconia or metal-ceramic — which should I choose?+
Zirconia looks more natural and has no metal, so it suits front and back teeth. Metal-ceramic costs less and is strong. We help you choose.
How many visits do I need?+
Usually two visits, about 3–7 days apart.
Is getting a crown painful?+
No. The tooth is numbed while it is shaped. You may feel mild sensitivity for a few days.
How long do crowns and bridges last?+
Usually 10–15 years or more with good brushing and regular check-ups.
Should I get a bridge or an implant?+
A bridge is quicker but needs the side teeth to be shaped. An implant does not touch other teeth. We explain both after checking.
