What is braces and aligners?
Braces use small brackets and a wire to slowly move teeth into the right position. Ceramic braces work the same way but use tooth-coloured brackets that are harder to notice.
Clear aligners are thin, transparent trays made for your teeth. You switch to a new set every 1–2 weeks and the teeth move a little each time. You can take them out to eat and brush.

How the procedure works

Consultation
We check your teeth, take photos and X-rays, and explain braces vs aligners, time needed and cost.

Planning
Moulds or a scan of your teeth are taken to plan how each tooth will move.

Fitting
Braces are fixed to the teeth in one visit of about an hour, or you receive your first set of aligners.

Regular check-ups
Every 4–6 weeks the wire is adjusted or your progress is checked.

Retainers
When the teeth are straight, braces are removed and you get retainers to keep them in place.
Recovery and aftercare
- ✓Teeth may feel sore for a few days after each adjustment. Soft food helps.
- ✓Avoid hard and sticky food like nuts, toffees and bhutta.
- ✓Brush after every meal and use an interdental brush around the brackets.
- ✓Wear aligners 20–22 hours a day for them to work.
- ✓Wear your retainer as advised, or teeth can slowly move back.
Common questions
How long does treatment take?+
Most cases take 12–24 months. Simple cases with aligners can be shorter.
Am I too old for braces?+
No. Adults can straighten their teeth at any age if the gums and bone are healthy.
Do braces hurt?+
Fitting does not hurt. Teeth feel tight or sore for 2–4 days after fitting and after adjustments. This settles on its own.
Are clear aligners as good as braces?+
For many mild to moderate cases, yes. For complex bite problems, braces may work better. We tell you which suits your teeth.
